Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt's production of cane and beet sugar reached 2.2 million tonnes during 2016, said Essam Fayed, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.
Egyptians annually consume 3.1 million tonnes, which alludes to a consumption gap amounting to 900,000 tonnes of sugar.
Egypt is globally ranked as the first sugarcane's producer with 50 tonnes per acre, according to the press release.
In May, the Egyptian government pointed out that strategic sugar stocks are enough to last up till early 2017.
