Egypt’s telecom firms lose 4.5m subscribers in FY17/18

Cairo – Mubasher: The number of mobile phone subscribers in Egypt slipped by 4.6%, or 4.58 million subscribers, during fiscal year 2017/2018.

The number of subscribers declined to 95.73 million at the end of June, compared to 100.31 million in FY16/17, according to a recent report by the communications ministry.

Meanwhile, the number of landline telephone subscribers rose by 17.6% to 7.40 million, versus 6.29 million a year earlier.

The number of mobile internet data users stood at 32.81 million in the previous fiscal year, up 2.30% year-on-year from 32.07 million.

Meanwhile, the users of USB modem increased by 6.20%, reaching 3.48 million in the 12-month period, compared to 3.28 users in FY16/17, the report indicated.

The report showed a 22.09% increase in the number of ADSL subscribers in FY17/18, hitting 5.83 million, compared to 4.77 million subscribers at the end of June 2017.
