Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt's tourism sector shrank 28.7%, while the number of arrivals fell 19.5% in the fiscal year 2015-2016 ended on 30 June, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Planning.
Tourism revenues retreated by half year-on-year in FY 2015-2016, official statistics said.
Russia stopped its flights to Egypt after a Russian plane was destroyed by a terrorist act in Egypt in 31 October 2015, leaving 224 dead. Russian tourists represent 40% of total arrivals to Egypt.
The tourism sector represents 13% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of Egypt, adding to being an important source of foreign currency.
