Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt's unemployment rate increased to 9.6% in the second quarter (Q2) of 2020, compared to 7.7% in Q1-20 and 7.5% in Q2-19, official data showed.
The rise in unemployment rate was ascribed to the economic disruption caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the measures taken by the government to contain the virus, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said in a statement on Monday.
Over the April-June period, the number of unemployed amounted to 2.574 million individuals, up by 15.1% from 2.236 million in Q1-20 and an increase of 22.9% from Q2-19.
The labour force fell by 8% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) to 26.689 million in the three-month period ended on 30 June from 29.008 million.
