Egypt signs $4.45bn contract to implement high-speed electric railway's first line

Cairo - Mubasher: Egypt has signed a 15-year contract worth $4.45 billion with a coalition led by the German company Siemens to design, supply, implement, maintain, and finance the first line of the high-speed electric railway network with a total length of 660 kilometres.

The project is implemented by the Egyptian Ministry of Transport and an Egyptian-German coalition led by Siemens.

The signing of the contract was attended by Egypt's Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, and the Minister of Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, and the German Ambassador to Cairo, Frank Hartmann.

Al-Wazir said that the first line comprises 21 stations, linking Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean coast and passing through the New Administrative Capital, Cairo, 6th of October City, Giza, Alexandria, and New Alamein city.

The Egyptian Minister of Transport further remarked that the coalition will carry out the signal, communications, railway, and electromechanical works as part of the contract, alongside manufacturing and supplying mobile units, including express trains and electric tractors.

The high-speed electric railway network comprises three lines, with a total length of 1,850 Kilometres to link Egypt’s eastern and northern coasts.
