Egypt spends EGP3bn on pipelines to 3 power plants

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum has started constructing gas pipelines at EGP3 billion for natural gas-fired combined cycle power plants in Beni Suef, Borollos, and the new administrative capital.

Egypt currently develops a five-phase project of the new administrative capital over 190 million acres in the east of Cairo.

Earlier, the Minister of Housing, Mostafa Madbouli, stated that four construction companies are assigned to execute the infrastructure of the new capital: they are the Arab Contractors, the Holding company for Construction and Development, Concord Engineering and Contracting and Orascom-Hassan Allam alliance.

Meanwhile, the new three combined-cycle power stations will be jointly built by Siemens, Orascom Construction, and Elsewedy Electric.

The three stations, which are expected to be gradually operated in December 2016, will work at a capacity of 4.8GW each, totaling 14.4GW.

“Each of the three power plants –- Beni Suef, Burullus and New Capital – will be powered by eight Siemens H-Class gas turbines, selected for their high output and record-breaking efficiency”, according to online data by Siemens.

Moreover, GASCO added 162 km of main trunking pipelines at EGP1.3 billion in 2015, accordingly expanding its network to 7,343km, said Karem Mahmoud, head of the GASCO Company.

He added that the company is planning to add 395 km of main trunking pipelines, along with completing a bunch of projects worth EGP5 billion aiming at supplying natural gas to the rest of plants defined in the sector’s five-year strategy (2012-17).
