Egypt to inject EGP 756m into 18 cultural projects

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Ministry of Culture plans to open 18 projects at a total value of EGP 756 million in 2020, as part of the ministry’s action plan to develop the cultural scene in Egypt.

The announcement came during a recent meeting between the culture minister Inas Abdel-Dayem and the prime minister Mostafa Madbouly.

Abdel-Dayem referred that 14 cultural centres were inaugurated in eleven governorates. The new centres include cultural institutions developed at a value of EGP 363 million.

Moreover, seven theatres, including the National Theatre, were re-opened at a cost of EGP 151 million.

The minister of culture added that a reading hall in the National Library and Archives (Dar Al Kotob) was inaugurated at a cost of EGP 5.8 million, in addition to opening an arts and music hall and Naguib Mahfouz Museum and Creativity Centre in Gamaliya, Al Azhar, at a cost of around EGP 13.3 million.

Meanwhile, Abdel-Dayem highlighted that digital transformation is among the objectives of the ministry’s programme to develop cultural institutions.

She noted that Port Said was announced the capital of Egyptian culture for the year 2020, remarking that an agenda for arts and cultural activities is being prepared to be implemented throughout the year in Port Said.

As part of the ministry’s action plan, events highlighting Cairo as the capital of Islamic culture are being organised in line with the arrangements for the Egyptian-Russian cultural year 2020, alongside hosting the Islamic Conference of Culture Ministers 2020.
