Egypt to open new markets for agricultural exports

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt is planning to open new global markets for its exports of vegetables and fruits, the head of Egypt's Agriculture Export Council Abdel Hamid Al-Demerdash told Reuters on Tuesday.

"There is going to be an official Egyptian delegation visiting the countries which have banned the goods. We hope that these countries [resume] importing from Egypt before the beginning of the new export season,” Al-Demerdash added.

He noted that some Arab countries asked Egypt for a "whitelist" of trusted Egyptian exporters who can “guarantee the safety of their products”, adding that the Agriculture Export Council is seeking to establish this list, in order to avoid harming exporters.

During the next season, Egypt’s exports of vegetables and fruits will reach 50% to Arab states and 40% to Europe and Asia, he highlighted.

The value of Egyptian exports amounted to $2.1 billion through exporting 3.5 million tonnes during the season ending August 2017, versus $2.2 billion in the year before.

On an annual basis, Egypt’s exports of vegetables and fruits amounted to 1.8 million tonnes and 1.4 million tonnes, respectively, involving exports of about 90 products, according to the news agency.
