Egypt to raise railway ticket prices by 20-25% in June

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s transport ministry is planning to increase the prices of railway tickets by 20% to 25%, in addition to adjusting suburban railway lines’ ticket prices prior to the end of June 2018, Almal News reported, citing transport minister Hisham Arafat.

Arafat noted that suburban short-distance lines are the Egyptian National Railways’ (ENR) main source of financial losses, as its ticket prices do not exceed an EGP 1.

This decision aims at developing current railway system and implementing new projects in Egypt, in addition to covering the sector’s debt and compensating its deficit, the minister highlighted.

On Monday, a top official at ENR announced that the authority is considering to apply an increase in railway ticket prices in coordination with the Ministry of Transport.
