Egypt to set up MidEast’s 1st hydropower plant

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt is set to establish the first hydropower plant in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the country’s minister of electricity and renewable energy Mohamed Shaker said.

At Ataqa Mountain, the new plant will use pumped-storage hydroelectricity technology at a capacity of 2,400 megawatts (MW), Shaker revealed in a statement on Sunday.

In addition, El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is currently being established with a planned capacity of 4,800 MW, he added.

The country is also implementing several solar energy plants in Congo, Uganda, and Eretria at a capacity of 4 MW for each plant.

Egypt has set a strategy to increase renewable energy contribution to the energy mix to 42% by 2035.
