Egypt tourism revenues surge 212% in 9M

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s revenues from tourism jumped 211.8% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2017 to $5.3 billion from $1.7 billion, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing a top government official.

The number of tourists who visited Egypt between January and September surged 55.3% to 5.9 million visitors, the top official, who spoke to the agency on condition of anonymity, revealed.

The higher revenues during the period came on the back of increased spending by tourists to around $88.2 a night, the official said, noting that tourists from Europe grew 85% to 3.2 million.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently forecast that Egypt’s tourism revenues will rise in the fiscal year 2017/2018 by as much as 25.7%.

In September, a government official revealed that the state’s revenues from the tourism sector in the first seven months of 2017 were up 170% year-on-year to $3.5 billion.
