Dubai – Mubasher: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has completed the construction of the calcination process facility of the AED 12.12 billion ($3.3 billion) Al Taweelah alumina refinery, bringing the percentage of the completed works in the megaproject to 82%.
With estimated total required work hours of 2.4 million, Al Taweelah refinery is planned to refine bauxite ore into alumina, the feedstock for aluminium smelters, according to a company statement released on Tuesday.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery’s sections will be completed in sequence to carefully plan pre-commissioning and commissioning of the thousands of pieces of equipment that constitute the giant plant.
The calcination process facility includes over 1,700 instruments, 100 motors, and some 165 kilometres of cabling, the UAE-based industrial company revealed.
“The first completion of a major section of Al Taweelah alumina refinery is a significant milestone in the development of this huge project, which will secure for EGA the competitive supply of the feedstock for aluminium smelters,” EGA’s CEO Abdulla Kalban commented.
Al Taweelah refinery’s first production is expected to take place in the first six months of 2019.
“We continue to make good progress on the project as a whole. I congratulate everyone who has contributed to this achievement,” Kalban said.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery is located in proximity to EGA’s Al Taweelah aluminium smelter in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi.
