Expat remittances hit $8.7bn in Qatar in 9M – Survey

Mubasher: Remittances from expatriate workers in Qatar fell 13.3% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2018.

Foreign workers' remittances in the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) declined to QAR 31.3 billion ($8.7 billion) for the first three quarters of 2018, from QAR 36.1 billion ($10 billion) in the corresponding period in 2017, official data showed.

Remittances amounted to QAR 10.12 billion ($2.78 billion) in Q1-18, QAR 10.86 billion ($2.98 billion) in Q2-18, and QAR 10.31 billion ($2.83 billion) in Q3-18.

In 2017, remittances of foreign workers surged 6.5% year-on-year to $12.6 billion.

Qatar’s current transfer outflows, including transfers of expatriate workers, reached QAR 16.09 billion ($4.42 billion) in Q3-18, compared to QAR 16.13 billion ($4.43 billion) in Q3-17.

Transfer inflows to Qatar amounted to about QAR 815 million ($223.84 million) for the three months to September, down from QAR 1.32 billion ($362.53 million) for the corresponding period in 2017.

Deficit in the balance of current transfers rose 3.2% year-on-year to QAR 15.28 billion ($4.20 billion), from QAR 14.8 billion ($4.06 billion) in Q3-17.
