UAE – Mubasher: Remittances from expats in the UAE to 200 countries stood at around AED 1.5 trillion during the period between 2009 and 2018, increasing by 4% or AED 150 billion a year, data by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) showed.
Remittances accounted for about 11.1% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) of AED 169 billion in 2018, Al-Ittihad newspaper reported, citing the CBUAE.
More than 5.3 million expats from around 200 countries work in the UAE.
In the fourth quarter of 2018, remittances from expats in the UAE to their homelands reached AED 40 billion, according to data.
It is worth noting that 59.5% of total foreign workers in the GCC state are from the Southeast Asian countries, including India, Pakistan, and Philippines.
