France ends state of emergency two after Paris attacks

Mubasher: France has officially ended a state of emergency that was imposed two years ago, after terrorist attacks in Paris killed 130 people, as reported by Reuters.

The country has introduced a new security law replacing the state of emergency, the news agency cited critics saying that it undermines civil liberties.

The new security anti-terrorism law, is effective from Wednesday, and it gives police extended powers to search properties, conduct electronic eavesdropping and shut mosques or other locations suspected of preaching hatred.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe negated that ending the state of emergency could lead to a drop in vigilance from security forces, saying that it is the complete opposite.

“The level of threat is high everywhere in the world,” Philippe told journalists during a short visit to police officers guarding the Eiffel Tower in the French capital, a day after a pickup truck driver killed eight people in New York.
