Riyadh – Mubasher: France-based, EDF plans to participate in a tender to establish two nuclear reactors in Saudi Arabia, Reuters reported, citing two informed sources as saying.
The French company also plans to participate in King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE), the agency added.
EDF has discussed with Saudi authorities about selling Areva-designed European Pressurized Reactors (EPR), but it has not publicly confirmed it will bid the offer.
“Saudi Arabia, which wants to reduce domestic oil consumption, is considering building 17.6 gigawatts of nuclear-fuelled power generation capacity by 2032 and has sent a request for information to international suppliers to build two reactors,” Reuters noted.
“EDF would bid in the tender and that EDF officials had visited KACARE last week to discuss the request for information and to give a presentation about the EPR reactor,” a second source indicated.
(KACARE) is a governmental agency that its work is to deal with the nuclear programme, in drafting its nuclear new-build programme.
