GCC Islamic banks eye Oman market

Mubasher: Hamood Sangour Al Zadjali, CEO of Oman's central bank said GCC banks and investors are requesting licenses to operate Islamic banks in the Sultanate.

The top executive stressed Oman's commitment to pegging its currency to the U.S. dollar, ruling out any plan to remove the peg in future.

There are two Islamic banks and six Sharia-compliant windows for conventional banks. The two Islamic banks are struggling to make profits, while the Sharia-compliant windows are generating profits, according to the official.

The CEO expects suitable amendment to the interest rates in the Sultanate shortly after the U.S. Federal Reserve raises policy rates.
