GCC considers anti-dumping tariffs on imported steel

By: Amr Adel

Dubai - Mubasher: The undersecretary for foreign trade and industry at the Emirati ministry of economy said on Monday that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are currently considering raising the tariffs on imported steel.

Abdulla Alsaleh told reporters on the sidelines of the Big 5 Exhibition in Dubai that the general secretariat of the GCC is currently considering a proposal that aims at protecting fair competition in the gulf markets.

The GCC is studying the tariffs imposed by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar to help local steel producers from cheap imports.

Alsaleh also revealed that the UAE might file a complaint against the USA in the World Trade Organization (WTO) for imposing anti-dumping duties on steel pipes.

There are currently attempts to resolve between the two countries, he added.
