GE contracts with EETC to expand Gabal El Zayt substation

Cairo – Mubasher: The American-based Company General Electric (GE) on Monday said that it inked an agreement with Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for the expansion of Gabal El Zayt Gas Insulated Substation.

The project aims to connect an additional 120 megawatts of wind power to the national electricity grid by the end of 2018, GE added in a statement.

GE will provide the substation with local project management, engineering, design, fabrication, erection of power transformers, site management, testing and commissioning services on a turnkey basis, according to the statement on the company’s website.

The total capacity of Gabal El Zayt substation is expected to reach 540 megawatts after expansion, with further plans to add another 40 megawatts in the near future, GE added.

“This project is a direct reflection of our efforts to continuously upgrade Egypt’s national grid, and in so doing delivering increased energy supply and support toward the diversification of the country’s energy mix,” said EETC Chairman Gamal Abdel Rehim.

Gabal El Zayt substation is considered the main connection point between Gabal El Zayt wind farm, which is one of the largest farms in the region.

“The wind farm expands our work with EETC to apply further extensions continues while ensuring minimal loss of transferred power. We remain committed to bringing our advanced technologies to Egypt to improve the efficiency of the electricity sector,” Mohammed Mohaisen, President and CEO of GE Power’s Grid Solutions business in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey commented.
