General Electric awarded SAR3.75bn Saudi contract

Riyadh-Mubasher: The U.S.-based General Electric (GE) has won a contract worth SAR 3.75 billion to supply Saudi Electricity Co. (SEC) with gas turbines to build a power plant in northern Saudi Arabia .

Under the contract, GE will build the Waad Al Shamal combined-cycle power plant, supply provide four advanced gas turbines, a steam turbine and will also provide turbine maintenance services.

The 1,390-megawatt plant, which will also operate with solar technology, will be able to provide the equivalent power needed to supply more than 500,000 Saudi homes.

The project will help SEC continue boosting the kingdom's power infrastructure to meet the growing demand for electricity, said Ziyad Al-Shiha, CEO of the utility firm.

He added that the project will offer job opportunities for nationals and boost the local industrial sector.
