Cairo - Mubasher: The Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said that an increase in temperatures by 1 degree Celsius will lower wheat production by 8.3% from 9 million tonnes to 8.3 million tonnes.
CAPMAS added in a report on Tuesday that rising temperatures will lower local wheat production from 2.69 tonnes per feddan to 2.2 tonnes from 2014 to 2025, according to the studies on the effects of climate change on Egyptian agricultural crops.
The report also noted that a rise by 2 degrees will shrink productivity to 2.09 tonnes per feddan, and will cut annual production to 7.9 million tonnes.
As for rice production, the report indicated that productivity will go down from 4.09 tonnes per feddan to 3.79 tonnes, while annual production will reach 4.3 million tonnes down from 5.8 million tonnes, if temperatures were to rise by 1 degree, while a rise by 2 degrees will reduce rice production to 2.76 tonnes per year, and total annual production to 4.2 million tonnes.
Egypt is the world’s biggest wheat importer in the world, with around 15 million tonnes per year, according to the data of the Egyptian government.
