IFC: Economic outlook for some countries ‘worrisome’

Qatar – Mubasher: Global economic outlook for 2016 shows ‘remarkable’ differences in economic performance indicators across the world, according to economists during participation at Euromoney Qatar 2015 that kicked off today.

The U.S. economy has ‘positive’ expectations, moving away from doubts surrounding other global economies whose economic outlook seems ‘worrisome’.

With more than 1.2 billion individuals worldwide with no electricity, with more than 2 billion persons – according to estimates – moving to urban areas in the upcoming 25 years, the lack in infrastructure is likely to directly affect economic growth, said Dimitris Tsitsiragos, Vice President of International Finance Corporation (IFC).

He added that the Middle East has around 20% deficit in electricity production capacity and similar deficit in water, hospitals, schools and housing, noting that such issue would worsen amid increasing number of refugees.

Tsitsiragos also highlighted the key role played by the private sector as well as the public-private sector partnership in securing such needs in present and in the future.
