IMF’s Lagarde names new IMF chief economist

Mubasher: International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde on Monday unveiled the name of the fund’s new chief economist or rather the economic counsellor and director for the IMF’s Research Department.

Lagarde named Gita Gopinath for the position, succeeding Maurice (Maury) Obstfeld. Who had announced his retirement plans back in July. Obstfel will retire at the end of the year.

India-born Gopinath currently serves as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University.
