IRENA new head urges more arduous drive for renewable change

Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: As he took office as the director general of the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Francesco La Camera said renewables need to push harder into transportation and heating.

La Camera – former director general for sustainable development, energy and climate at the Italian Environment Ministry – will replace Adnan Amin who steps down after eight years.

“We must do everything we can to accelerate the pace and scope of change if we are to meet climate objectives, while ensuring that the new energy paradigm is fair and inclusive,” La Camera said.

La Camera’s call came at the time of a rapid shift in the global energy landscape on the back of growth in renewable energy, amid efforts to rein in climate change.

“This is also a unique opportunity to spur economic growth in a sustainable manner and close the energy access gap by creating a world where energy is abundant and available to all,” IRENA’s new chief said.
