Cairo – Mubasher: Eni on Thursday unveiled a new oil discovery on the A-2X exploration prospect located in South West Meleiha licence, in Egypt’s Western Desert.
Located 103 km north of the Siwa oasis, the well is the first to be drilled by Eni to explore the deep geological sequences of the Faghur Basin.
“The exploratory well, named SWM A-2X, has been drilled to a total depth of 5,090 metres and encountered 18 metres of light oil in the Paleozoic sandstones of Dessouky Formation of Carboniferous age. The well has also encountered other hydrocarbon levels in the Alam El Bueib sandstones of Cretaceous Age,” Eni said in a statement.
The Western Desert well’s discovery was due to an exploration campaign designed to target the deep geological sequences of the Faghur Basin.
In addition to the development of this new well, which will require appraisal activities, Milano-based Eni said it was planning to drill other nearby exploratory prospects in the near term.
In the event that its upcoming exploratory prospects bear fruit, Eni “may open a new productive area in Egypt,” it said.
The Faghur Basin well has commenced production in the Dessouky sandstones and delivered 2,300 barrels of oil per day (bopd) of light oil (32° API) and 0.4 MMSCFD of associated gas, the Italian company added.
The oil driller went on to say that production was likely to be linked to already existing nearby infrastructures and then shipped to El Hamra Terminal through existing pipelines.
