Japan’s Toray unit falsifies product data

Mubasher: The Japanese synthetic fibre-maker Toray on Tuesday revealed that its unit Toray Hybrid Cord falsified product data and rewrote quality tests for products shipped to 13 companies.

"We deeply apologise for causing troubles and concerns," said Toray’s president Akihiro Nikkaku at a press conference in which he disclosed the unit’s violations.

Toray Hybrid Cord discovered 149 falsifying data-related violations committed between 2008 and 2016, Nikkaku added, noting that the subsidiary did not discover any safety issues or breaches of law.

“Data falsification occurred only at the subsidiary, and did not affect Toray's main carbon-fibre business,” the Japanese company stated.

The synthetic fibre-maker's president announced that the company only decided to disclose the violations after the leaking of information regarding similar violations in Kobe Steel.

This incident succeeded a series of similar scandals among the Japanese corporations, including Nissan, Subaru, and Mitsubishi Materials.
