The Nikkei lost 0.7% to 16,758, and the TOPIX moved 0.7% lower at 1,347.
The Japanese bourse was impacted by the rise in yen by nearly 0.1% against the US dollar to 112.3, according to data of MaketWatch.
Shanghai Composite added 0.11%, while Hang Seng index shed 0.30%.
