Jebel Ali Port, Jafza report growth in construction, steel sector

UAE - Mubasher: Jebel Ali Port, DP World's port, has handled an average of 4.5 million TEU in the construction and steel sector from 2010 to 2019, equal to 1 billion metric tonnes.

Jebel Ali Port registered more than 50 million metric tonnes of general cargo in the past ten years, according to a press release on Tuesday.

In 2019, the port has handled more than 5 million metric tonnes of metal, steel, and construction materials.

At the same time, Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) recorded AED 13.9 billion trade in the steel, metal, and construction segment last year.

Enabling DP World to become multimodal trade and logistics hub, Jebel Ali Port and Jafza saw imports of iron and steel, wood, salt sulphur, earth stone, glass, and aluminum topping traded commodities in the sector.

Meanwhile, the export commodities included iron and steel, aluminum, copper and lead, and salt sulphur, earth stone. 

China, India, Ukraine, Russia, and Germany are key trade partners for imports, while India, the USA, the UK, Pakistan, and Iraq are among trade partners for exports.

The CEO and Managing Director of DP World UAE Region and CEO of Jafza, Mohammed Al Muallem, said: "Despite the challenging conditions, looking at the gradual market recovery and the resumption of trade and business activities, we are expecting an increase in demand for our facilities from steel and construction material companies."
