KSA approves national atomic energy project

Riyadh – Mubasher: The Saudi Council of Ministers approved the establishment of the National Atomic Energy Project, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Wednesday.

President of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) Hashim bin Abdullah Yamani praised this approval, saying that “the peaceful objectives and goals of the project come within the Kingdom’s commitment to international conventions and treaties, both multilateral and bilateral ones, as well as the guidance provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency on such programmes.”

The project consists of large nuclear reactors, of which each will have an electric capacity between 1,200 to 1,600 megawatts (MW), according the Saudi Gazette.

“These reactors would enable the Kingdom to acquire and develop atomic energy technologies and build them in isolated areas away from the electrical grid,” Yamani stated.
