Riyadh – Mubasher: The Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) has purchased 805,000 tonnes of wheat in an international tender at a value of SAR 812,480 ($216.66) per tonne.
The tender regarded the acquisition of 12.5%-protein wheat and had closed on 9 June, the organisation added.
The quantity of the wheat will be delivered from European Union (EU), North and South American, and Australian origins, according to a statement.
The tender aims to cover the domestic demand and preserve wheat strategic inventories, Ahmed Al Fares, governor of SAGO, said.
The second shipment for this year will arrive between August and October, and will be distributed on Jeddah Islamic Port (440,000 tonnes), King Abdul Aziz Port (255,000 tonnes), and Jizan Port (110,000 tonnes).
Fares added that 23 specialised global companies were invited to compete on the offered quantity.
