Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: Abu Dhabi Ports Company has revealed that the first phase of the Khalifa Port expansion will be completed by the end of 2017 or the beginning of 2018 at the latest, Al Emarat Al Youm newspaper reported on Sunday.
The company is set to complete the deepening of the port’s basin to 18 metres and the expansion of the main canal to 18.5 metres, Abu Dhabi Ports’ CEO Mohamed Al Shamisi told the newspaper.
The expansion also aims to enable the passage of larger container and goods ships, the top official added.
Following the completion of the expansion, the port’s total annual capacity will reach 5.6 million vessels, he added.
The Khalifa Port’s free zone includes around 40 companies in different business segments, such as industrial and commercial businesses.
The free zone provide importers and exporters with easy access to markets housing over 4.5 billion consumers in four time zones worldwide.
