Kuwait internet firms to pay 400% higher leases after ministry decision

Mubasher: Kuwait’s internet providers will raise their service rates for the public in the coming period. This comes after the Ministry of Communications (MoC) increased the lease rates for communication tower sites.

This step will prompt the main internet service providers to hike the service prices to cover the increased financial costs, which have surged by as much as 400% in some sites, sources told Aljarida newspaper.

The ministry’s decision came as a surprise, the sources said, noting that telecom service providers had not been previously informed of the ministry’s intention to increase leases.

After the MOC’s decision, some internet firms will pay about KWD 500,000 in annual lease for sites they have been using for years.

The MOC’s decision will come into effect starting January, the sources added.
