Cairo – Mubasher: German chancellor Angela Merkel started a two-day visit to Egypt on Thursday, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.
Merkel will meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to discuss efforts to stop the flow of migrants to Europe across the Mediterranean, as part of Berlin’s "Marshall Plan for Africa".
The Egyptian ambassador to Germany, Bader Abdelaty, said that Merkel’s visit to Egypt will have a positive impact on the investment and tourism sectors.
The chancellor will then head to Tunisia to meet its president, Beji Caid Essebsi, to discuss the same issue.
Egypt and Tunisia are resisting proposals to host EU-backed refugee camps, the Financial Times said.
Merkel is facing widespread discontent over her decision to welcome refugees in 2015.
