Nakheel awards AED 430m Deira Islands deals

Dubai – Mubasher: Nakheel on Wednesday announced awarding four contracts for its new 15.3 square-kilometre waterfront city, the Deira Islands in Dubai.

The contracts worth a combined AED 430 million involve works on islands A and B of the four-island development, currently under construction, the Dubai-based developer revealed in a statement.

The works awarded include a sewage treatment plant, a district cooling plant, a substation, and piling work for an 800-room resort.

So far, Nakheel has invested around AED 7.5 billion in infrastructure and construction contracts in its Deira Islands project.

The awarded contracts entail an AED 228.3 million deal to VWS Emirates LLC/ Butec S.A.L (Dubai Branch) for the design, construction, and 10-year operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant.

Nakheel awarded Emirates District Cooling (Emicool) an AED 100 million 10-year deal to build a district cooling plant for both the Deira Islands Night Souk and nearby Nakheel buildings, including operation and maintenance.

In addition, AED 90.5 million for a 132/11kV substation were awarded to AG Power LLC, covering the southern island (Island A).

Nakheel’s Deira Islands will have a total of eight substations when the entire project is completed.

Furthermore, the Dubai-based developer awarded AED 14.5 million to Delta Foundations’ Dubai branch “for piling works for the 800-room RIU beach front resort, Nakheel’s joint venture hospitality project with Spain’s RIU Hotels and Resorts. A construction tender for the resort was issued in May, and is due to be awarded by the end of this year,” the statement showed.

"More [contracts] are due soon,” Nakheel said.

In April, Nakheel stated that it had awarded an AED 4.2 billion construction contract for Deira Mall, “the centrepiece of Deira Islands and Dubai’s biggest shopping mall in terms of retail space.”
