Parliament mulls law to abolish govt railway monopoly - Al-Ahram

Cairo – Mubasher: Al-Ahram newspaper said that Egypt’s Ministry of Transportation (MoT) prepared a draft law to abolish the government's monopoly of railway services by allowing the private sector to participate in transport projects, including construction, management, and maintenance.

Article 2 of the current law, regarding the establishment of the Egyptian National Railways (ENR), will be adjusted, which will grant it the right to monopolise the ENR’s services and projects, according to the newspaper.

The Egyptian minister of transportation, Hisham Arafat, had stated earlier this month that EGP 45 billion are needed to develop the railway sector.

Wahid Qarqar, member of parliament and deputy of the Transport Committee, said that the parliament is supposed to discuss law adjustments in the next session to give global firms the opportunity to participate in development.
