Port of Fujairah begins offering cleaner marine fuels

Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: The Port of Fujairah has started offering cleaner marine fuel oils in an effort to comply with global emissions rules that will come into force at the beginning of 2020.

Marine fuels in Fujairah, one of the world’s largest oil hubs, with a maximum 0.5% sulfur content are “available in Fujairah as early as February 2019 onwards,” according to Port of Fujairah’s website.

It is worth noting that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will prevent ships from using fuels with sulfur content above 0.5% as of 1 January 2020, Reuters reported.

Accordingly, shippers can switch to burning cleaner but more expensive oil, invest in exhaust cleaning systems, or redesign vessels to run on alternatives like liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Last month, Port of Fujairah’s authorities revealed that they would ban open-loop scrubbers, mirroring similar moves in Singapore, the world top bunkering hub, and China.
