Qatar, Japan trade surplus hits $1.1bn in February

Mubasher: Qatar’s trade surplus with Japan soared 25.4% year-on-year in February, according to the Japanese Ministry of Finance's (MoF) monthly bulletin released on Monday.

Trade surplus between the two Asian countries amounted to JPY 126.28 billion ($1.13 billion) in the second month of 2019, compared to JPY 100.70 billion ($903.55 million) in the same month a year earlier.

The annual growth in trade surplus was supported by the 19.3% rise in Qatar’s exports to Japan which levelled up to JPY 136.97 billion ($1.23 billion), from JPY 114.76 billion ($1.03 billion) in February 2018.

Qatar’s total imports from Japan fell 24% year-on-year, logging JPY 10.68 billion ($95.83 million) in the second month of 2019, against JPY 14.06 billion ($126.16 million).

The Middle East’s trade surplus with Japan retreated 8.4% to JPY 513.42 billion ($4.61 billion) in February, versus JPY 560.31 billion ($5.03 billion) in the corresponding month a year earlier, the data showed.

Japan’s trade surplus logged JPY 339 billion ($3.04 billion) in February, compared to a JPY 13.86 billion ($124.36 million) deficit in the same month a year earlier.
