Mubasher: Qatar and Sudan on Monday will sign a $4 billion agreement in Khartoum to develop and manage the Red Sea Suakin Port in eastern Sudan, Sudanese transport minister Makkawi Mohamed Awad said.
The cost of the project’s first phase amounted to $500 million, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
The development of Suakin Port is expected to be completed by 2022, the top official noted.
The project includes a free zone and besides the seaport infrastructure, according to the local newspaper.
Although Qatar will fund the project, Sudan’s stake will reach 51% in the project, while Qatar will own the remaining 49% stake, Awad said.
Sudan's transport ministry is at pains to upgrade the infrastructure of its seaports to keep pace with the development of maritime transport industry, the minister said, citing cooperation with international companies specialised in this field.
