Qatar Airways OKs further transparency to settle US airline dispute

Mubasher: Qatar Airways on Monday said that it would commit to further financial transparency and to not to launch indirect flights to the US through other nations.

This move is part of an agreement with the Trump administration in a bid to address accusations of US carriers that their Gulf rivals obtain unfair government help, Bloomberg reported.

US airlines estimated that the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) had provided more than $17 billion to Qatar Airways over ten-year period, Bloomberg added.

“This would be a landmark milestone for the American airline industry that will protect our workers and ensure that our foreign competitors play by the rules and do not undermine our international agreements,” said chief legal officer of Delta Air Lines Peter Carter.

Sources said that Qatar Airways will disclose any key financial deals with state enterprises to ensure those are being done on commercial terms.

Moreover, Qatar Airways informed the US that it does not plan to conduct “Fifth Freedom” flights to the US.

Fifth Freedom flights are ones which start in an airline’s home country and touch down in a different nation ahead of continuing on to a third country, the US in this case, Bloomberg added.
