Qatar Petroleum, Total discover major gas find in S.Africa

Mubasher: Qatar Petroleum (QP) and its partners, led by French oil and gas major Total, on Thursday announced a significant gas condensate discovery located in Block 11B/12B in the Outeniqua Basin, around 175 kilometers off the southern coast of South Africa.

The Brulpadda well was a final depth of 3,633 metres and has been successful in the Brulpadda-deep prospect, according to QP’s statement.

The offshore discovery might contain between 500 million to more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent, Total’s CEO Patrick Pouyanne said.

The Brulpadda well is the “first discovery in Qatar Petroleum’s international exploration ventures,” the GCC nation’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QP’s President and CEO Saad Al-Kaabi said.

Spanning over 19,000 square kilometres with water depth ranging from 200 to 1,800 metres, Block 11B/12B is operated by Total with a 45% working interest.

Qatar Petroleum holds 25% stake in Block 11B/12B, while partners include CNR International and Main Street own 20% and 10% stakes, respectively.
