Qatar’s assets with non-residents slide QAR 47.5bn in 2017 – Survey

Mubasher: Qatar’s assets with non-residents declined QAR 47.5 billion for the full-year 2017, according to a survey by the ministry of development planning and statistics (MDPS) issued on Tuesday.

Non-residents owned assets worth QAR 390.1 billion in 2017, compared to QAR 437.6 billion a year earlier.

The survey collected its data from about 150 significant enterprises that had accounted for more than 90% of total investments and by various functional, geographical and economic activity (industrial) characteristics.

By the end of 2017, liabilities to non-residents went down by 13%, or QR 96.4 billion, to QR 649.2 billion instead of QR 745.6 billion in the previous year, according to the statement.

Other foreign investments accounted for 65% or QAR 424.4 billion, followed by foreign direct investment in Qatar at QAR 130.5 billion or 20% and portfolio investments at QAR 89.8 billion or 14% of the total liabilities.

Moreover, other foreign investments consisting of long-term loans and trade-related short-term financial instruments accounted for 53%, or QAR 206.1 billion, of the total assets during 2017, the statement showed.

Net outflows of non-resident direct investment abroad and other changes amounted to QAR 2.3 billion in the prior year.
