Qatar’s trade surplus hikes 49% in April

Mubasher: Qatar’s trade balance surplus surged 49.3% year-on-year in April 2018, supported by the increase in exports.

The GCC country's trade surplus reached QAR 14.7 billion last month, compared to QAR 9.83 billion in the same period a year earlier, according to a report released on Sunday by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics.

Total exports of the world’s biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter, including goods of domestic origin and re-exports, hiked 27.3% year-on-year to QAR 24 billion, according to the report.

Year-on-year, exports jumped due to higher exports of petroleum gases, which grew 22.9% to QAR 14.1 billion.

Japan topped the list of Qatar’s export destinations with QAR 4.7 billion, followed by South Korea with QAR 4.1 billion and India with QAR 2.6 billion.

While the gas-rich nation's imports rose 3.1% year-on-year to QAR 9.2 billion, the report showed.

The US and China accounted for QAR 1 billion of Qatar’s imports each, followed by India, which acquired around QAR 800 million.
