Qatar’s trade surplus hits $4.4bn in December

Mubasher: Qatar’s goods trade surplus rose 6.6% year-on-year in December, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS).

The GCC nation’s trade surplus amounted to QAR 15.88 billion ($4.36 billion) last December, compared to QAR 14.89 billion ($4.09 billion) in the same month in 2017.

The annual rise in Qatar’s trade balance surplus was attributed to a 13.3% drop in imports to QAR 9.54 billion last month, compared to QAR 11 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier.

Exports of the world's richest country per capita declined 1.9% to QAR 25.43 billion last month, against QAR 25.91 billion in December 2017.

Month-on-month, Qatar’s trade surplus retreated 1.9%, from QAR 16.19 billion in November 2018 due to a 1.1% decline in exports and a 0.3% growth in imports.
