Red Sea Development eyes to build Saudi’s largest marine protected area

Riyadh – Mubasher: The Red Sea Development Company eyes to build the largest marine protected area in the kingdom and the Red Sea on an area of 5,373 square kilometres.

The company’s environmental initiatives and goals will leave 75% of the islands untouched to protect the environment while nine islands will be labelled as protected areas, according to an official statement.

Moreover, the firm will entirely depend on renewable energy, establish new criteria for sustainable development, increase biodiversity in the destination up to 30%, and prohibit the use of non-recyclable plastic.

The Red Sea Company is the developer behind the world’s most ambitious sustainable tourism project, the Red Sea Project, and is fully owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).
