Riyadh – Mubasher: A consortium led by Saudi power firm Acwa has been awarded a contract for the construction and operation of 100 megawatts (MW) independent solar power plant in Bahrain.
Acwa, Japanese contractor Mitsui & Company and Bahraini industrial conglomerate AlMoayyed won the contract after competing with GS Engineering & Construction, Phelan Energy Group and Alfanar Contracting, Arabian Business reported on Tuesday, citing the announcement by Bahrain's Electricity and Water Authority (EWA).
The solar power project seeks to develop renewable energy to increase the electricity output capacity and meet rising demand for electricity in the GCC kingdom.
Planning for the project started in December 2017 after the appointment of consultants Mott MacDonald, KPMG, Trowers & Hamlins.
The solar power plant will be established on a build-own-operate (BOO) model in a bid to improve cost competitiveness and enhance efficiency in project management, Bahrain's state-run utility noted, giving no further details on its cost.
The Acwa-led consortium won the tender after competing with 13 shortlisted firms out of the total 26 companies which applied for the pre-qualification rounds.
The co-ordinating committee headed by Bahrain’s crown prince, deputy supreme commander and first deputy prime minister, prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa approved the solar power project.
