Saudi Arabia denies plans for buying Manchester United – Minister

Riyadh – Mubasher: Saudi Arabia’s information minister on Monday denied news reports by a British newspaper that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman plans to purchase Manchester United F.C.

The news is “completely untrue,” Turki Alshabanah said on Twitter.

“The club held a meeting with [the oil-rich kingdom’s] Public Investment Fund (PIF) to discuss a sponsorship opportunity, and the PIF listened to the proposals as any investment and did not produce any results,” Bloomberg News reported, citing Alshabanah as saying.

Glazer Family, that owns the Premier League soccer team, declined to comment on the matter, the New York-based news agency added.

Glazer Family bought the English club in 2005 and they listed it on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 2012.

On Saturday, 16 February, the SUN newspaper stated that bin Salman is ready to increase a EUR 3.8 billion ($4.29 billion) to buy Man Utd F.C.

The Saudi sovereign investor PIF denied last November it was interested in acquiring the British major football club.

In October 2018, some British media sources said that bin Salman could soon begin discussions with Manchester United owners to acquire the club.
