Saudi Aramco eyes more security at offshore sites, awards deal to US firm

Riyadh – Mubasher: Saudi Arabian Oil Co, globally known as Saudi Aramco, on Wednesday announced awarding a new contract to US-based General Dynamics’ subsidiary.

Through the award, Aramco looks to bolster security at its offshore facilities, according to Reuters.

In July, sources told the news agency that the deal entailed “long-range integrated security systems at nine offshore sites in the Gulf.”

Other defence firms had submitted bids to Aramco’s tender including US-based Raytheon Co, Germany’s Rheinmetall AG, and Leonardo’s Selex ES Saudi Arabia.

The sources did not specify the value of the contract but stated that General Dynamics would work with the Saudi Binladin Group.

Over the past period, Aramco has been signing deals and contracts with foreign firms with established local manufacturing operations as part of its in-kingdom total value add programme (IKTVA).

Under the IKTVA programme, Aramco looks to double its locally-produced energy-related goods and services to 70% by 2021, as well as exporting 30% of total domestic energy goods and services produced in the Kingdom during the period.
