Saudi gov’t hires 1st robot at TVTC

Riyadh – Mubasher: Saudi Arabia's first robot employee has started work at one of the kingdom’s government entities on Sunday.

Ahmed Al-Issa, the kingdom’s Minister of Education, has handed over the robot’s job ID under which it will begin work as a technician at the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC).

The new employee has promised the minister to be ideal.

This will help Saudi citizens to benefit from cutting-edge technology, which will achieve the kingdom’s “Vision 2030” reform plan, Al-issa said.

The technician robot is highly advanced regarding this matter, he added.

For his part, governor of TVTC Ahmed Al Fahaid said that the robot will begin work at the 33rd Jenadriyah Festival to welcome visitors.

This comes within the framework of the corporation’s strategy in bolstering robots and artificial intelligence (AI), Al Fahaid added.

In 2017, Saudi Arabia became the world’s first country to grant citizenship to a robot after granting Sophia, the social humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics, Saudi citizenship. The move came as part of the world's top oil exporter’s plan to set up a $500 billion futuristic city named NEOM.
