Saudi holdings of US Treasuries down 30% in June

Riyadh – Mubasher: Saudi investments in US Treasuries fell by 30.46% annually in June 2020, equivalent to $54.7 billion, according to data from the US Department of the Treasury.

Saudi Arabia’s holdings of US debt instruments reached $124.9 billion by the end of June, compared with $179.6 billion in June of last year.

On a monthly basis, the kingdom raised its holdings of US Treasuries by 1.1% or $1.4 billion from $123.5 billion in May 2020.

In the first half (H1) of 2020, the holdings plunged 30.53% on a year-on-year (YoY) basis, equivalent to $54.9 billion.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia headed Arab countries in terms of investments in US bonds, followed by Kuwait with $44.9 billion and Iraq with $31.6 billion.

At the global level, the kingdom held the 16th rank among top holders of US Treasuries. Japan came on top of the list with $1.261 trillion, followed by China with $1.074 trillion.
