Saudi regulator to adjust public transport system, regulate fares

Riyadh – Mubasher: The Saudi Public Transport Authority (PTA), the kingdom’s regulator of land, railway, and maritime transport, is looking at fixing fares for inter-city travel as well as travel within cities, Saudi Gazette reported.

The movie comes along with Saudi Arabia’s strategy to restructure the public transportation system across the GCC country.

Accordingly, the PTA will determine the cost of train and bus tickets, in addition to the taxi fare.

The state-owned entity noted that the new system will be applied in small and medium cities.

A minimum rate would be fixed for short distance travel, meanwhile, the rates for long trips would be determined based on the distance travelled.

“The authority said the fare structure would be fixed incorporating a number of basic elements. It must include a minimum starting fare, fare per kilometre and the waiting charge per minute,” the newspaper said.
